As you know, it’s black history month, and there have been many events commemorating that all over Delmarva.
Perhaps you remember sitting in history class and learning about the underground railroad, which was a network of secret routes and safehouses used by American slaves. We’re learning about the Reverse Underground Railroad today. The Reverse Underground Railroad was where freed slaves sold other slaves back into slavery.
Authors H.A. Maxson and Claudia Young, who’ve co-authored a book about the Reverse Underground Railroad join us on the couches to tell us what inspired them to write a book about this fascinating piece of history that not many people know about.
Max and Claudia wrote seven books together prior to the novel. The first series of books were about Delaware history and were written for young readers. The books were used in about 50% of schools in Delaware for their social studies classes.
Their most recent novel came about after someone at a conference asked if they had ever heard of the Reverse Underground Railroad. Max and Claudia became very interested and researched the topic.
In 2014, “Comfort: A Novel of the Reverse Underground Railroad” was published. Purchase the book from Amazon here.
