Jenny Nauman Named Delaware’s 2016 National Distinguished Principal
Nauman says she was shocked when she walked into a gym full of faculty, students and family, especially considering she did not know she was in contention for that award, as she thought it was not being given out at the elementary level this year
The school, located at 910 Shields Ave., opened in 1967 and currently serves 720 students grades K-5. According to the school’s website, its mission is to, “create a positive environment of high expectations and mindful learning that empowers students to become life-long learners,” and with the help of Nauman it seems to be doing just that.
Nauman has been the principal of Shields Elementary for the past 6 years and has taken the theme of “riding the wave of excellence” to heart and has led the school to receive several other recognition in the past. According to the Richard A. Shields Elementary School website, the school has exceeded the standard for 11 years in a row, was a 2012-2013 Recognition School, as well as a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School.
Nauman said she credits the school’s success to the “unique culture of trust built between the staff, parents and students,” and sees the award as a direct reflection on the hardworking people that make her job easy.
