In support of this historic achievement, Justin Barnes, vice president of operations for Ashley HomeStore – Delmar, Del., on Monday presented Delmar’s field hockey team with a donation sufficient to cover the expense for the entire team to receive a state championship jacket.
“Not one member of the team will go without a commemorative jacket and not one member of the team will have to pay one dime for their jacket,” said Barnes.
Barnes said Delmar field hockey coach Jodi Hollamon and her team are an example of what parents and area schools should aspire to when it comes to student athletes.
“Nearly everyone on her team is on the honor roll, and with the exception of two seniors, the entire team will be returning next year with the expectation of winning yet another state title!” Barnes said.
Barnes noted that Hollamon is the niece of Susan Pusey, who was head coach for Pocomoke High School’s field hockey team, which won state championships.
“In the same way that (the late) Coach Susan Pusey inspired the young women of Pocomoke to a standard of excellence both on and off the field, Jodi, her niece is doing exactly the same thing,” Barnes said.
He is encouraging other businesses and members of the community to assist the Delmar field hockey team in its fundraising efforts.
“You’re motivated as a business owner or as a parent when you see a coach investing in a student beyond athletics,” Barnes said. “Jodi is invested beyond the superficial. She’s in it for the kids and establishing a legacy of winning both on and off the field. I’d like to invite other businesses to rally behind their community. Let’s celebrate what these girls have done. ”
