The Eastern Shore of Maryland Spelling Bee will take place Saturday morning, March 5 in the Ella Fitzgerald Center at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne.
Gia Baustista of Salisbury, Md., the winner of the past two years, is now a high school freshman and has retired from competition.
Any student in grades fourth through eighth from Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester county schools are eligible to participate. Fifty students qualified to participate as their schools’ representatives this year.
The Delaware State Spelling Bee will also be held Saturday morning, March 5, at at Saint Mark’s High School in Wilmington. Twenty-eight students from schools across the state are slated to participate in the event.
Each winner of Saturday’s spelling bees will receive an all-expense paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. which airs on ESPN in late May. In addition, each winner will receive and unabridged Webster’s 3rd New International dictionary and a keepsake medallion.
