Tammy Taylor, Run to Remember Memorial Day 5K race coordinator, says getting out for a run or a walk is a great way to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
“The race started as another way to build the endowment fund at the CFES which is used to maintain the Wicomico War Veterans Memorial in perpetuity,” Taylor said. “A committee of veterans raised funds for construction and the ongoing maintenance of the Memorial entirely through donations from the public.”
The race will begin and end at the Wicomico War Veterans’ Memorial in front of the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. The race follows a fairly level course through Salisbury City Park on a gravel path and dirt trails.
“This years race begins and ends at the Memorial to help people remember those from Wicomico County who lost their lives while defending our freedom. I called the race the Run To Remember so people will take a little time to reflect and remember our fallen heroes over Memorial Day weekend.”
Following the race, refreshments will be available with awards presented to the top three male and female finishers in five age categories. If you’re not a runner, walkers are welcome to take part in all or a portion of the race.
All proceeds raised during the event will benefit the Wicomico War Veterans Memorial at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, which honors the citizens of Wicomico County who lost their lives while serving the United States during war.
