This year’s race will include fun to fill the whole weekend, beginning with a welcome event at Ropewalk Restaurant in Ocean City on Friday from 5-8 p.m., followed by the race Saturday morning and a celebration Saturday night from 6-8 p.m. at Seacrets Jamaica USA in Morley Hall.
Jessica Evans, Eastern Shore race and development manager, says the event is like a giant party. Registration begins at Saturday promptly at 7:30 a.m. at the race village in the inlet. Participants can also register on Friday at the Princess Royale Hotel from 11 a.m.- 8 p.m.
The race will kick off Saturday morning at 9 a.m., offering a 5k with a timing option as well as a one mile family fun walk. Throughout the event there will be speakers, live disc jockeys, sponsors and a whole tent dedicated to survivors and their families.

Evans says this year will be the first year Race for the Cure will be serving beer. Backshore Brewing Company in Ocean City has donated all of the beer for the event and Evans says the party should last in the inlet parking lot until about 12 p.m.
According to Evans, all proceeds from the race will go to Susan G Komen Maryland and the funds are used for programs that are on and serving the Eastern Shore. Many of these proceeds will be used to go towards mammograms and transportation to and from doctors appointments.
The Susan G. Komen operates off a 75/25 split, meaning 75% of funds raised stay within state and 25% go to headquarters.
Last year, Susan G. Komen Ocean City Race for the Cure raised more than $150,000. This years goal for Ocean City is $250,000. Evans says the organization likes to aim big.
“We have had a lot of tremendous sponsors in Ocean City…the Town Council and Mayor have been extremely supportive, but we can always use more people! On the Eastern Shore you can’t find someone who hasn’t been touched by cancer in one way or another… it’s all about the emotional connection.”

Evans says if there is one thing she could tell insiders looking in, it’s to ‘Wear pink!’
