BISM is a unique not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to positively change people's attitudes about blindness. We do this by offering comprehensive rehabilitation programs, diverse employment opportunities, and services for blind and low vision people of all ages.

Established in 1908 by the Maryland General Assembly as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Blind Industries and Services of Maryland's (BISM) purpose is to positively change people's attitudes about blindness.

BISM nurtures a culture that promotes open communication, teamwork and trust while offering comprehensive rehabilitation programs and evolving employment opportunities for blind and low vision people of all ages. Working with our associates to achieve independence and personal growth is our most important objective, because we believe in the powerful capabilities of all blind people.

Each year we provide programs and services that serve over 2000 blind Maryland citizens. BISM employs 400+ exceptional associates at our eleven facilities in Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia and Kentucky, where we manufacture the highest quality products.

Innovative Programs and Services for Blind and Low Vision People

Blind Industries and Services of Maryland (BISM) offers free life skills rehabilitation programs for blind and low vision people of all ages. Our mission at BISM is to provide each student with the ability to achieve self-sufficiency, personal growth and independence.

Comprehensive instruction is offered in Braille, Cane Travel, Adaptive Computer Technology, and Independent Home Living. The majority of BISM instructors are blind and serve as mentors and role models to the students.

The Salisbury Center for Blind Seniors
BISM’s new training center serves blind and low vision seniors on the Eastern Shore, and includes a training kitchen, Braille classroom, adaptive computer technology lab, multi-purpose room, spacious meeting area, and offices. Call 410-749-1366 for more information.
